ten minutes hate is written and edited by Joanne Greenway, with guest posts from John Maguire and Nick Bryan.

Taking inspiration from (and certain liberties with) George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, she began writing as Julia Smith in March 2009.  In the book, which you really should read – especially if you are one of the people who has lied about it, the Two Minutes Hate is described as a ‘hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness’. ten minutes hate is much the same, with an extra eight minutes added for good measure.

Posts are arranged by reference to the four main ministries in Orwell’s book.  The Ministry of Peace covers wars on drugs, terror and other random words, the Ministry of Truth has commentary on the news and media, while the Ministry of Plenty oversees economic affairs and the Ministry of Love concerns itself with fear, torture, brainwashing and other matters of the heart.  To counter all this misery, the Golden Country is a place of escape, remote from the cares of everyday life.

ten minutes hate has been broadcasting from Japan since 2010, with extensive coverage of the effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake, fundraising efforts by projects like #quakebook and volunteering in Tohoku. In March 2012, I published a book comprising posts taken from this site called The Teas That Bind.
